This Ability Trust – Advancing Disability-Inclusive Sexual & Reproductive Health in Kenya

About us

Our Story

In 2013, we began wheelchair rugby workshops that used adaptive sports as a platform to provide access to Sexual and Reproductive Health services to women with disabilities in Nairobi. Through partnerships with Family Health Options, over 200 women with disabilities received reproductive health services such as Breast and Cervical Cancer screening, Contraception and Family Planning, STIs and HIV prevention and counselling services and information.

Since 2015, we have been working to strengthen movement-building for women with disabilities in Kenya in a bid to strengthen our collective advocacy and increase visibility for our lived experiences. We supported the coordination of national advocacy efforts among organizations of women with disabilities to develop and present a shadow report to the CEDAW Committee on “Advancing the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights of women with disabilities, which resulted in specific recommendations to the Government of Kenya on the rights of women and girls with disabilities.

From 2018, we have been working directly with community-based groups of women with disabilities in various counties to build their leadership and increase their advocacy skills to enable meaningful engagement. We have invested in supporting service providers to strengthen their knowledge and capacities on disability-inclusive SHRH and ensure equity and dignity is prioritized with service provision. These partnerships position us to effectively work together in holding policy makers accountable and agitate for change that is responsive to the community.
